CrossFit Widnes FAQ

What is a WOD?
The “WOD” is the “Workout of the Day”. Each WOD has a set of parameters known as the prescription (Rx). These parameters give the athletes something to shoot for, whether it’s short term or months down the line. In the mean time, everything they we do can be scaled or modified to each persons own ability. For example, if an athlete cannot perform a pull up, we have bands to aid the pull up. Cannot do a 24” box jump? You can step up or choose a lower box. EVERYTHING we do is scalable.

Is CrossFit for me?
CrossFit is for everyone – mums, dads, seniors, police, firefighters, office workers and yes, elite athletes too! We believe in scaling to your needs, but pushing you hard when you need it. Fat loss, increased cardiovascular and respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, accuracy and agility. We treat the body and person as a whole.

Do I workout on my own or do I have a trainer?
You will have a trainer/coach/mentor and a class full of like minded people to help you through the workouts. At CrossFit Widnes, each class is led by a trained and certified coach. Training is always done in group classes that are everybit as fun as they are hard work. You’ll feel the competitiveness and camaraderie every class brings. A typical class includes a group warm up, a skill component or strength element, explanation/demonstration and examples of the workout and then the workout itself.

Do I need to be in shape first?
No! Every workout we do is scalable to match your current abilities. We will increase your load as you increase your fitness level. If you can move, you can do CrossFit!

What is the advantage of CrossFit over other programs?
CrossFit works! It works because it treats the body and training as a whole. The workouts are functional movements, constantly varied under high intensity. We will show you the way to jump, climb, run, lift, push, pull and move in different ways every day. Looking great is just an awesome side effect. Combined with our Nutrition program you can achieve amazing results.

Is CrossFit a cardio or weightlifting program?
It’s both plus much, much more! We perform functional movements, giving you a comprehensive, full-body workout in under an hour. Classes are instructor led and peer driven providing an excellent mixture of individual coaching and group motivation. Workouts change constantly ensuring that you will always make progress and never get in a rut with your training. We combine elements of boot camp workouts, gymnastics (especially rings and floor work), Olympic weight lifting, rowing, running, biking and much more. Some workouts are done for time, others for maximum number of reps. The possibilities for fitness are endless. We have a huge number of exercises we choose from so working out never becomes boring!

How long is the average CrossFit workout?
Sessions are scheduled in one hour increments. As mentioned earlier, a typical class includes a group warm up, a skill component or Strenth, explanation/demonstration and examples of the workout and then the workout itself.

I don’t want to get too bulky – will CrossFit add too much muscle?
Not to worry. Since  CrossFit is a core strength and conditioning program and not a bodybuilding program, your results we be a leaner, stronger, faster and more toned version of yourself.

I am want to get involved, what do I do next?
